ATTRACTIONS

 

Cook Forest Canoe Rentals offers four trips along the scenic Clarion River.  A 4-mile trip takes 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete, while the 10-mile trip lasts 3 ½ hours and a 16-mile trip can be completed in 5-7 hours.

     Two-day trips with overnight camping are popular and affordable.  Prices are based on two per canoe.  Life jackets and transportation to launch site are included.  Enjoy an afternoon on the river.  Group rates available.  814-744-8094.

Double Diamond Deer Ranch - The deer park features about 20 white tail deer, with new fawns expected in June.  There are white, piebald, albino and brown deer.  There are covered walkways so you may view the deer in any kind of weather.  Group tours and group rates are available.  Low admission is good all day, so you can come back at scheduled feeding times.  The gift shop features affordable handcrafts, wildlife oriented gifts and toys.

     The Buck Barn is located just off the gift shop.  It has over 100 wildlife taxidermy displays.  “Everything from a mouse to a moose.”

     The Flea Market is open weekends from mid May to mid October.  It is indoor and outside, with room for 20 vendors.

     Located in ½ of the flea market building:  “A glow in the dark indoor mini golf.”  It has 9 holes, with a prehistoric theme.  First game $4.00, each additional game $2.00

The Farmers Inn features a unique petting zoo, a full-service restaurant, bake shop, two gift shops, driving range and 2 mini-golf courses all situated on a lovely farmland setting.  Over 150 animals, domestic and exotic, exhibited at the zoo.  Live deer, bear and more.

     Youngsters enjoy mini-golf and excellent ice cream.  Eat in or take-out.  The restaurant features a salad bar, a weekend buffet, generous servings and mouth-watering desserts.  The restaurant has an opening to a country store and rocker-filled porch.  Also visit the new ice cream parlor and bulk food store.

Leeper Outdoor Flea Market offers something for everyone each Saturday and Sunday from May through October.

     The oldest area flea market, more than 100 vendors are situated in a field behind the Leeper Market.  Food concessions are located on-site, while the Sawmill Restaurant, Leeper Market, and Country Store are within easy walking distance. 814-744-8811.

The New Jefferson County History Center featured exhibits:  When Johnny Came Marching Home:  depicts the ends of 3 wars; the Civil War, WWII, and Vietnam Conflict.  Uniforms, clothing, photos, documents, etc. show Jefferson Co. facing change from wartime to peacetime.  And: Times of Sorrow and Hope:  photos taken in Pennsylvania from 1935 to 1946 by America’s greatest photographers.

     Also:  Stuff and More Stuff:  Prehistoric Lithic Technology, Brookeville:  The County Seat, and exhibits on logging and agriculture.  A 15 minute sound and light show of The Bowdish Model Railroad run by The Bowdish Volunteers entitled “The People of Jefferson County Celebrate” may be viewed during hours, and on the first Friday of each month.

     This center opened to the public March 26, 2004, the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Jefferson County.  Housed in the Nathan Greene Edelblute Building (ca 1855 and 1875), they offer research facilities, small archive, ten exhibit areas, a Lumber Heritage Region Visitor Center, and the History Center Shop, with maps, books, and items by Jefferson Co. artists and crafters.  They are located ½ block east of the Courthouse.  Hours:  Tues.-Sat. 12-5 pm, and Sun. 2-5pm.  Jefferson Co. Historical Society members admitted free.  Adult non-members $3 and $2 for children twelve and under.

 

The Pale Whale Canoe Fleet is the premier livery in Cook Forest furnishing guests with Grumman Canoes, Kayaks, and hundreds of single and double tubes.  Located in the heart of Cook Forest on the beautiful, wild and scenic Clarion River.  The Clarion River is very clean.  As you float you may see numerous species of birds, fish and mammals.  If you fish, there are many trout, smallmouth bass and other species.

     The Pale Whale has plenty of convenient parking right on the property.  There are clean, complete restrooms and a foot wash station.  Four neat changing rooms round out the facilities.

The Verna Leath Sawmill Theatre is a summer theatre located in Cook Forest State Park near the pool, with live performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from June 1 through September 9.  (Some Wednesday performances also, see schedule for specific dates.)  All productions are performed by local artisan groups such as:  Clarion University, Brookville Community Theatre, Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Group, Knox Community Theatre, North Clarion Players, Clarion Community Theatre, and the Warren Players.  The scheduled performances this year include musicals, comedies, dramas, and more.  For a complete theatre schedule, check The Artisan, visit our website at:  www.sawmill.org or contact us by phone at: 814-927-5275.  Reservations recommend.

 

Van Dyke & Company is sponsoring a Dance Camp at Cook Forest Sawmill Center for the Arts June 15th through June 20th.  Boys and girls ages 8 and older with a year of ballet training may apply.  Daily classes include ballet, jazz, modern tap, yoga and Latin dancing.

     Van Dyke & Company is celebrating 23 years of dancing in this area.  We have had students awarded scholarships based on ability to some leading training programs.

MaMa Doe’s Restaurant – Located at Shiloh Resort on Route 36 S. – 1000 off the main road – very secluded and serene.  MaMa has great food off menu, and weekend dinner and breakfast buffets in season.  Kids 4 and under eat free buffet and stay over for free with their families – no extra charges.

Montana’s Country Café - Located in the small village of Marble, which borders Fryburg, sits a gem of an eatery called Montana’s Country Café, just a short drive (under 30 minutes) from the Cook Forest area, but worth the trip.

Michelle’s Café is Clarion’s very own “Central Perk”.  A unique coffee shop and café located on Main Street, Clarion.  Open 7 am weekdays and 8 am Saturdays.  We offer bagels, scones, sandwiches, soups, salads, gourmet coffee beans, and teas.  Michelle’s Café also offers the Italian experience with our “Gelato” from Mulberry Street Creamery.
